Heat waves continued across Dhaka, Khulna and Barisal divisions for third consecutive day yesterday, with the day’s highest temperature soaring to 38° C in Khulna and Jessore. Met office sources said there is no chance of the heat abating in the next two or three days. The day temperature is likely to rise slightly today, they added. There is no possibility of rainfall to control the soaring temperature, notwithstanding the forecast of rain at a few places in Dhaka, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions in the next 24 hours, starting from 6pm yesterday.
The rain, if any, would not be heavy enough to arrest the heat wave, the sources said. The sweltering heat has made life unbearble for city dwellers, despite a slight fall of temperature from 36.2 °C on Saturday to 36 °C yesterday in Dhaka. The heat is made even more unbearable by the high relative humidity of 80 per cent in the city. Although it is the beginning of the week, people are not venturing outdoors except for pressing business. Rickshaw and auto-rickshaw fares have also increased due to the ongoing situation.
