Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club sealed a stunning one-wicket win over Mohammedan Sporting Club to confirm the super league berth of the Walton Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League as Legends of Rupganj was eliminated from the race.
Rupganj was watching the match intensely as Mohammedan’s victory could give them a hope to seal the six-team elite phase of the league. However at BKSP-3 ground Jamal produced a huge upset by overcoming Mohammedan’s gigantic total of 339.
Gazi Group Cricketers tasted their second consecutive defeat after nine straight wins as Prime Bank Cricket Club secured a comfortable seven-wicket win over them at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium at Fatullah. Despite the defeat, Gazi ended as a league leader with 18 points. The other five teams of the super league are Abahani Limited, Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club, Prime Bank Cricket Club, all with 16 points but they were second, third and fourth respectively on the basis of net run rate, and Mohammedan Sporting Club and Sheikh Jamal with 14 and 12 points.
Rupganj also had 12 points but they were edged by Mohammedan on the basis of run rate. If Jamal would have lost the match, Rupganj could seal super league berth for being ahead of head-to-head battle and net run rate.
In the day’s another match, an inconsequential one, Kalabagan Krira Chakra beat Khelaghar Samaj Kallayan Samity by five wickets at BKSP-4.
MSC vs Sheikh Jamal
Mohammedan, riding on the twin tons of Shamsur Rahman and Rony Talukdar posted a big 339 but failed to defend it.
Former national batsman Shmasur Rahman lifted Mohammedan to the big score hitting 144 off 152 balls with seven fours and as many sixes. His opening partner Saikat Ali also started in an attacking mood but could not continue the tempo hitting 39 of 28 balls. But there were no respite for the Sheikh Jamal bowlers as one down Rony Talukdar continued to send the Jamal bowlers all the corners of the field hitting 110 of 99 balls as Mohammedan raced to 257 for three in the 44 overs. However Sri Lankan Charitha Aslankana was the lone batsman to fail with the willow as he contributed only two. Nazmul Hossian Milon clubbed one four and two sixes in his 9 ball and 21 run innings while Kamrul Islam Rabbi was unbeaten on 12. Elias Sunny grabbed two for 66 and Rasel al Mamun captured two for 31 runs.
However Mohammedan was stunned by Sheikh Jamal who completed an unexpected one wicket victory scoring 343 for nine with just two balls to spare. Prasant Chopra, the Indian opener hammered 86 off 60 balls to lay the foundation. Shohag Gazi, the former national off spinner excelled in his hard hitting role playing an equally attacking 89 run innings curved off just 64 balls hitting eight fours and three sixes. With two inspiring innings Sheikh Jamal never looked back and the flag was carried by Tanvir Haidar who blasted 77 off 72 balls with six fours and two sixes. Elias Sunny, another experienced name also proved his worth with an unbeaten innings of 39 off 45 balls steering Sheikh Jamal to a superb victory.
Prime Bank vs Gazi Group
Prime Bank sent Gazi Group Cricketers to bat first and proved the decision is justified by bundling Gazi out on a paltry 214 for nine. Gazi Group had a disastrous start losing both the openers Anamul Haque and Mehedi Hasan on one and two runs respectively. The wound, however was fixed by former national one down Mominul Haque who stood firm playing an innings of 79 off 106 balls hitting three fours and one six. Another national discard Jahurul Islam ably supported Mominul Haque with 66 run innings of 84 balls. However, after their departure Prime Bank bowlers again reigned supreme grabbing the last six wickets for only 16 runs. It was a total teamwork for the Prime Bank bowlers with Nazmul Apu grabbing three, followed by Al Amin Hossain and Taibur Parvez who had two wicket hauls, Asif Ahmed scalped one. Later it was a cakewalk for Prime bank who scored 218 for three in 46.5 overs. Zakir Hasan’s 66, Abhimnayu Easwaran’s 52 and two unbeaten knocks of 41 and 33 from Al Amin and Taiabur Parvez saw Prime Bankl register a seven wicket victory.
Kalabagan vs Khelaghar
Khelaghar’s decision to bat first proved futile as the newcomer in the top flight managed to score a moderate 204 for seven in the stipulated 50 overs. Middle order Rafsan Al Mahamud’s watchful 71 off 98 balls with six boundaries and one six settled the trembling ship. Kalabagan however toiled hard to reach the target as they lost five wickets and had to spare only 2.1 overs to clinch the victory. Md. Jashimuddin, the opener chipped in 89, former national skipper Ashraful added 56 to continue his form and Tushar Imran scored 56 taking Kalabagan to their 5th victory in 12 matches.
