Robber’ killed in Laxmipur ‘gunfight’

A suspected robber was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police near the Dattapara-Chatkhil highway in Laxmipur sadar upazila early yesterday. The deceased was identified as Russel of Chayanni Tabgaon village under Chatkhil upazila of Noakhali district. According to sources, police in a drive on Thursday arrested Russel alias Kala Russel, a suspected robber, along with a firearm, two bullets and 11 yaba pills from an abandoned house at north Joypur village.
Acting on information derived from the arrestee, police took him to a drive at Dattapara to recover arms around 2 early yesterday.
Sensing the law enforcers’ presence, Russel’s associates opened fire on police, prompting them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chandraganj Police Station
Motaher Hossain said. Russel was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while others managed to flee the scene, Motahar said, adding that three police personnel were also injured. The OC also said that Russel was accused in 20 cases including that of robbery, abduction, rape, and murder.
