He is only 12, but has a dogged determination. His father pedals a cycle-rickshaw and mother is physically challenged. He lives with his family in a slum at Madhubagh in Moghbazar area of the capital. The boy, Nasir, delivers bottled water to groceries and corner shops to support his family. He collects the bottles from a local factory and delivers them to the shops.
Nasir’s day begins as early as 6am. He pedals his cycle-van from 6am to 2pm every day. Bottled water is in great demand, as there is a shortage of drinking water in the locality.
His work is gruelling, especially in the sweltering heat. The back-breaking job earns him Tk. 180 a day, supplementing his father’s income.
Although Nasir is forced to work at this tender age, he is determined to go to school. Nasir studies in a local primary school, but he misses classes because of his work. His classmates, however, have come forward to help him.
The boy makes every effort to learn his lessons. His teachers know of his daily grind and the way he struggles to support his family. They help Nasir so that he can continue his studies and appear for his exams.
Nasir knows his task is uphill but will not give up. He keeps pedalling down the streets of Madhubagh and Hatirjheel under the blazing sun.
Not only does Nasir want to complete high school, but has even bigger dreams. He is confident that he will make it one day.
