Govt likely to take step against 55 schools

The government has decided to take action against 55 "blacklisted" primary schools, as no students from these educational institutions have passed the latest primary education completion (PEC) exams. The Directorate of Primary Education (DPE) has already issued showcause notices against these primary schools under eight categories, asking them to explain soon the cause of such results.
DPE sources said that no one passed the PEC exams this year from at least 55 primary schools across the country. It has been learnt that there were 265 examinees from these educational institutions. Of these primary schools, 17 are non-registered primary schools, 15 kindergarten schools, nine NGO schools, four BRAC schools, seven newly nationalised primary schools, one community primary school, one high school-annexed primary school and one temporarily approved private primary school. The sources said that the DPE was disappointed with the results of these schools and decided to take action against such schools in Noakhali, Gazipur and Gaibandha districts.
Meanwhile, Harun Ur Rashid, upazila education officer of Gazipur Sadar, sent a letter to the DPE, saying that three students from the Tajdid Academy Primary School had taken part in the PEC exams in 2016, but could not clear the exams.
When asked, the headmaster of the school said they were trying to impart better education to the students.
Mahbubur Rahman, upazila education officer of Kapasia in Gazipur, sent another letter to the DPE, mentioning that two examinees of Firoza Academy KG School, who had taken part in the PEC exams in 2016, could not clear the tests.
When asked, the school authorities blamed the bad results on the absence of qualified teachers. The school has been closed after such abysmal results.
Regarding the showcause notice, Gaibandha district education officer Aminul Islam Mandol said four students of the newly nationalised school in Sadullapur upazila had failed their PEC exams. However, the students passed after the re-evaluation of their results.
The school authorities said they would take special care of students and give them proper education. DPE director general Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal said: “We've issued showcause notices to primary schools from where not a single student has cleared their exams. We will evaluate the reply of the school authorities. If we find that they have taken proper steps, we will allow their students to take part in the PEC exams. In case of unsatisfactory answers, action would be taken against them." The results of the PEC and equivalent exams came out on January 30 this year. At least 30 crore students took part in the exams. Of them, more than 28 crore have clared the exams. During the formal announcement of the results, primary and mass education minister Mostafizur Rahman said that they would take action against schools from where no students had passed the exams.
