Two-day ‘Rabindra-Nazrul Utsab’ begins today

A two-day festival titled ‘Rabindra-Nazrul Utsab’ to mark the birth anniversaries of two main figures of Bengali literature, Nobel Laureate Poet Rabindranath Tagore on 25th Baishakh (May 7) and National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam on 11th Jaystha (May 25), is set to begin today.
Gitanjali Academy of Fine Arts has organised this two-day event featuring songs, instrumental recitation, recitation, dance and discussion at the Botmul of Rabindra Sarani in the capital’s Uttara. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Political Affairs Adviser HT Imam will attend the inaugural ceremony of two-day festival as chief guest, while former cabinet minister Advocate Sahara Khatun will be present as special guest.
Presided over by Emeritus Professor Rafiqul Islam, deputy speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah is expected to present at the closing day as chief guest and former foreign minister Dr Dipu Moni will attend as special guest.
Born on May 7, 1861 at Jorashako in Kolkata, Rabindranath Tagore was fountainhead of Bengali wisdom. His literary achievements included philosophy, novels, poetry, composing, visual art and playwriting.  His endurance led to receiving a Nobel Prize for Literature in the year 1913. Also, two of his songs, the ‘Amar Shonar Bangla’ and ‘Jana Gana Mana’, became the national anthems of Bangladesh and of India respectively. Rabindranath Tagore passed away on 7 August 1941.
On the other hand, born on 25 May 1899, Kazi Nazrul Islam was crowned in 1972 as the national poet of Bangladesh. Some of his most famous works included the BidrohiKobi, or Rebel Poet, Dhumketu (The Comet) and Bhangar Gaan (The Song of Destruction). His songwriting abilities allowed him to compose approximately three thousand songs. Sadly, in 1942, Nazrul started suffering from pick’s disease. The outspoken poet and activist for freedom passed away in Dhaka in 1976, at the age of 77.
These two icons of Bengali literature were always in favour of the betterment of humankind. Their creative works suggest they were both just and non-communal in their views and way of life. They believed in the universal love of all human beings.
