Bangladesh Army emerged champions in the ATN Bangla Gold Cup 31st National Hockey championship defeating Bangladesh Navy in a hard fought final by 8-7 in the tie- breaker after the regulation 70 minutes game ended in 3-3 draw.
Held at the Maulana Bhashani Hockey Stadium, in the high voltage final the hot favourite Bangladesh Navy, three times came from behind but could only bring the match to a tie- breaker but failed to bring the result in favour of them.
In the regulation time, Hassan Jubaer scored two goals and Monoj added one goal for Army while Roman Sarker, Ashraful Rana and Jimi scored one goal each for Navy to finish on 3-3.
In the tie breaker, Farhad Ahmed Shitol, Deen Mohammed Emon, Fazle Rabbi and Jimi could beat the Army goalkeeper but Roman Sarker shot was blocked. Army scored all five goals when Sabbir Rana, Rokunuzzaman, Shafiqul Islam, Pushkar Khisha Mimu scored for the Army in penalty shhot-out , while during Ahsan Habib’s attempt Navy keeper Asim Gope made a bad tackle and umpire directed for penalty stroke where from Sabbir Rana hit the board.
It was 14th national hockey title for Bangladesh Army which included seven times in a row from 1981 to 1986 and they were also title three times in Bangladesh Games hockey.
In the highly entertaining match Bangladesh Navy drew the first blood right in the second minute when they fabricated a quick attack down the right side and Moinul set a cross inside the area but national star Jimi being unmarked closely to the post failed to connect.
Army respond strongly to go ahead when Hassan Jubaer perfectly connected his reverse hit on a Milon Hossain cross early in the seventh minute (1-0).
Navy also bounced back quickly when Roman Sarker struck the equaliser on 16th minute when the forward did not miss to mark the target after receiving the ball from counter attack (1-1). Bangladesh Army again went ahead through Monoj converted a penalty corner with effort off Shafiqul and Monoj on 21st minute (2-1).
The top favourites Navy restored the parity with Ashraful Rana converted a penalty corner on 32nd minute (2-2).
Army regained their lead after the breather through Hassan Jubaer Niloy who closely pushed a Milon cross to score his second and stretched the lead to 3-2.
The closely contested and high spirited match turned into more attractive when Bangladesh Navy again leveled the tally on 40th minute and this time Jimi produced an excellent solo lead to hit the board (3-3).
Russel Mahmud Jimi, who rated the number one forward of national team, also displayed a piece of his stick outstanding stick-work on 56th minute but failed make it a successful finish as, Army keeper Rafiqul Islam was also made a terrific save, as the match ended on 3-3 and headed to tie-breaker.
