Bangladesh, Ireland seek 1st win in 2nd-leg today

Sports Reporter

Bangladesh will take on hosts Ireland in a crucial match for them in the tri-nation series today at Malahide, Dublin, a ground which is ideal for seam bowling.

The first leg match of the both teams were washed out due to heavy rain before which Ireland sliced the Bangladesh top order, taking the full advantage of the pitch. Bangladesh however though fought back thanks to a Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah Riyad. The match could have been interesting had the rain not interrupted the proceedings. Thereafter both teams lost to New Zealand which brought both of them in one point.
A loss to Ireland would significantly ruin Bangladesh’s prospect to make a direct qualification to the ICC 2019 World Cup. A win however wouldn’t give them a guarantee to the direct qualification unless they beat New Zealand in their last match of the series.
The condition is testing Bangladesh to great extent with the players looking little bit shoddy in the ground due to extreme cold. Still they had got a golden chance to beat New Zealand as the wicket was similar to what Bangladesh use at their home ground. The pitch was little bit slower and the ball was holding which meant it was ideal wicket for Mustafizur Rahman, Shakib Al Hasan and Mehedi Hasan Miraj. Mustafizur though bowled better, the latter two were expensive. Skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza was also expensive, giving New Zealand an edge. Along with Mustafizur, the other bowler who bowled extremely well was Rubel Hossain. His pace and aggression was a sight to behold in such kind of pitch.
“I should bowl better in the beginning but couldn’t do. Shakib did well with new ball but however we couldn’t do well as a unit in bowling,” Mashrafe said after the match.
Mashrafe believed the team was 20 runs short as the batsmen couldn’t carry the innings. Three batsmen—Mushfiqur Rahim, Soumya Sarkar and Mahmudullah Riyad struck half-century but Mashrafe said one of them should make it longer.
“We didn’t get big partnership and as a result we were 20 runs short which made the difference eventually.”
The captain hoped that the players will learn form their mistakes and bounce back with bang in the match against Ireland.
“The next match is important for us. We want to win it. Hopefully the boys will not do the same mistakes.”
