Former migrant worker now a bellwether for personal enrichment

“Now I have my own apartment and car, I’m living a much better life,” said Zhang Xiongqing, head of the Jicheng Flower Planting Professional Cooperatives in Xundian, Kunming. Since the establishment of the cooperatives, each member earns about 20,000 yuan a year, and their lives have improved greatly.

In November 2012, Zhang Xiongqing set up the Jicheng Flower Planting Professional Cooperatives based on the idea of “cooperatives + base + farmers”. After nearly five years of development, five individual members and more than 200 household members have joined.

 “Before the establishment of the cooperatives, I worked for others and was engaged in flower planting and wholesale distribution,” Zhang Xiongqing recalled. After a few years, he got the hang of the flower industry and thought of starting his own business. He quit his job and returned home, borrowing 180,000 yuan from the bank which he used to plant more than 20 mu of roses. Step by step, Zhang Xiongqing’s living conditions improved.

Later, Zhang Xiongqing set up his cooperatives. As the leader, he invited experts and skilled flower growers to train other members. By expanding the acreage and improving upon existing production technologies, Zhang Xiongqing led the members of the cooperatives onto the road to prosperity.

Adopting the operational philosophy of “planting + production + packaging + sales,” the cooperatives plant more than 500 mu of fresh-cut roses and have achieved an annual yield of five million stems. In addition, through the Kunming International Flower Auction Centre, their high-quality fresh cut flowers are sold to major domestic cities as well as those in Europe and the Americas. Annual sales have now topped six million yuan.
