Awami League (AL) stalwarts have urged countrymen, as well as party leaders and workers, to stand unitedly behind Sheikh Hasina and ensure the AL's victory in the next general election slated for 2019.
They said if AL leaders and workers remain united, it would not be possible to defeat the party in the elections. They were speaking at a programme to mark Sheikh Hasina’s 37th homecoming day, at the Krishibid Institution of Bangladesh (KIB) in the city, yesterday (Wednesday).
On this day in 1981, Hasina returned home after six years in exile following the brutal assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members on August 15, 1975.
“I will request our countrymen to stay beside Sheikh Hasina to build Bangabandhu’s 'Sonar Bangla',” said the AL's former general secretary and incumbent presidium member, Syed Ashraful Islam.
“Sheikh Hasina is now the premier. We’ll have to remain united to help her realise Bangabandhu’s dream to develop the country,” said Ashraf, also the public administration minister.
The programme was addressed, among others, by AL general secretary Obaidul Quader, AL presidium members Matia Chowdhury and Shahara Khatun, and advisory council member Tofail Ahmed.
