The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) ended its operations at the suspected militant hideout at Chuadanga village, about two kilometres from the district headquarters and walking distance from the Jhenidah RAB camp, yesterday (Wednesday) morning.
RAB personnel resumed the operations at five points, including the house of Selim, one of the suspected extremists, around 8:45am. The operations ended around 11:00am, RAB’s legal and media wing director Mufti Mahmud Khan told media persons at the local RAB office at 12.00 noon.
A team of the bomb disposal unit entered the house and defused three bombs around 11:30am.
A 17-member special team of the elite force, including RAB’s director of operations Lt Col Mahmud and Mufti Mahmud Khan, arrived from Dhaka early on Wednesday. The battalion cordoned off the house of JMB man, Selim, and four other spots in the locality.
The RAB completed its operations at the house of Selim on Tuesday evening and suspended another drive at the house of Selim. Law enforcers detained two extremists, Selim and Pranta, belonging to the Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh.
RAB said Selim is the brother of suspected extremist Tuhin, who was killed in another operation at Bazrapur, bordering Moheshpur in Jhenidah, on May 7, along with converted Muslim Abdullah. Pranta is the cousin of Tuhin.
During the drives, the team seized 186 PVC circuit boards, 18 explosives making neo-gel, four drums of liquid chemicals, one anti-mine, two suicide vests and some other explosives making materials and electronic devices from the house and other spots in the area.
The Jhenidah Sadar upazila nirbahi officer, Mostafizur Rahman, on Tuesday imposed Section 144 in the area and surrounding 500 yards. It was withdrawn when the drive ended around 11.00am on Wednesday.
Mufti Mahmud Khan said militants were very active since 2014. They live like normal people and carry out their work from a suitable place like Jhenidah. The Jhenidah den and other spots were used for storing explosives and chemicals to be sent to other militant hideouts as per the directive of top militant leaders. Usually militants cannot be identified without any allegation.
A total of about 1,500 suspected militants were detained for their alleged involvement in terror activities throughout the country. Usually, extremists use explosives and chemicals available in the locality. As Jhenidah is an industrial area, imported chemicals are available, which might have helped the extremists.
The dead militants, Abdullah and Tuhin, and arrested Selim and Pranta were followers of extremist Limon, belonging to the Sarwar–Tamim group. The extremists have been using different areas as their hideout, Mufti Mahmud Khan added.
