N’GANJ 7-MURDER CASES

High Court bench assigned to hear death references

STAFF REPORTER

Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha yesterday assigned a High Court (HC) bench for hearing the death references and appeals in the sensational Narayanganj seven-murder cases.

Talking to this correspondent, Additional Registrar of the HC Sabbir Faiz said that the chief justice has sent the death references and appeals to the HC bench of Justice Bhabani Prasad Singh and Justice Mustafa Zaman
Islam for disposal.
“The High Court bench will hold the hearing on the death references and appeals on special priority. The matter will come up in the daily cause list of the HC. After that, the High Court bench will fix a date for hearing the death references and appeals in the cases,” Faiz added.
Earlier, on Tuesday, a separate HC bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim and Justice Mohammad Jahangir Hossain directed the government to engage state defence counsels within seven days for five absconding death row convicts in the cases.
The HC bench came up with the order after hearing an application filed by the Death Reference Section of the Supreme Court, seeking its order on the appointment of state defence for the convicted fugitives.Three of the fugitives—Md Mohiuddin Munshi, Al Amin Sharif and Md Tajul Islam—are former soldiers of Bangladesh Army, sacked by the defence services after their involvement in the crime came to light. The other two fugitives are Sanaullah Sana and Shahjahan, both aides of Nur Hossain, death-row convict and ex-councillor of the Narayanganj City Corporation.
On May 7, the documents relating to the Narayanganj seven-murder cases reached the HC before the hearing on the death reference and appeals. On January 16, Narayanganj district sessions judge Syed Enayet Hossain sentenced 26 people, including Nur Hossain and dismissed RAB officials Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Maj. Arif Hossain and Lt Com. MM Rana, to death in the seven-murder case. Twelve of the convicts are currently on the run.
The Narayanganj court also sentenced seven to 17 years’ imprisonment to nine others in the case. On April 17, 2014, seven people, including NCC panel mayor Nazrul Islam and senior lawyer Chandan Sarker, were abducted from Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road. Later, their bodies were found floating in the Shitalakkhya River.
