Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said the government wants development, but not in lieu of putting people's lives in trouble.
“We want development, but we don't want such development that put people's lives in problems,” she said while speaking at a presentation on the ‘Communication System of Dhaka City’at her office, reports UNB.
The prime minister said it is now necessary to think about how to develop the Dhaka city from its present condition as it was not built in a planned way. “We can say this city has been built in an unplanned way,” she said.
Noting that the capital city is the centre of a country, she said, “Its atmosphere and communication system should be better so that people can live here comfortably. We have to create that opportunity. It's our duty,” she said. Hasina also said whoever comes to power tries to build the city at their will. “That's why the present complexities have arisen,” she said.
She said with the development of economy, people's purchasing capacity is on the rise. “People are buying private vehicles, but Dhaka city has no enough roads to accommodate this huge number of cars,” she said.
The prime minister mentioned that most of the city roads are from north to south but the number of east-west roads is very much negligible. “We've started work to make some east-west roads,” she said.
She also said there was no Master Plan for the city which was very much necessary for a capital city. Hasina said although the government has taken a number of projects to develop the capital city, there is still more scope to do so. “We have to look after the communication system and take necessary steps to make Dhaka city more livable,” she said.
Recalling the once beautiful environment of Dhaka city where there were huge trees and ponds, canals, rivers in and around, she said whenever any military dictator came to power, it felled the trees and filled up the ponds, canals and rivers.
Mentioning that Dhaka has gone through a lot of change in the recent years, the Prime Minister said, “Change is good if it comes in a planned way.” She also criticised the construction of high-rise buildings indiscriminately that cause problems for an entire area. Railways Minister M Mazibul Hoque, Water Resources Minister Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud, Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, LGRD Minister Engineer Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and mayors of two Dhaka city corporations were present at the programme.
