Bangladesh to procure six new ships from China

Six new vessels will be added with the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) fleet by 2018.Bangladesh is procuring six vessels from China at a cost of Tk 1,843 crore. A three-member delegation led by Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan has left Dhaka Monday night for China. The other members of the delegation are Additional Secretary of the Shipping Ministry M Abdul Kuddus Khan and Executive Director (technical) of Bangladesh Shipping Corporation M Sayed Ullah.
Among the six vessels, three are oil tankers and remaining three are bulk carriers. The capacity of the each vessel is 39,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT), which are under construction at YZJ shipyard in China’s Jiangsu Province.
China National Import and Export Machineries Corporation (CMC) will supply the vessels to Bangladesh at a cost of Tk 1,843 crore. Of the total amount, the Chinese government is giving Tk 1,448 crore as loan, while BSC has to pay Tk 395 crore.
According to sources, the oil tankers will be used for Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) to transport imported purified oil from abroad. Besides, the bulk carriers will be used for transporting open goods, fertiliser and coal for power plant.
