The month of abstinence is upon us; and this year, Ramadan will be held at the height of summer. Already, efforts are underway to restructure our lifestyle for the month long fasting when normal habits pursued all the year round will see certain changes. We are happy to note that the government has kept the issue of smooth power supply in mind and during a recent meeting it was agreed that all out efforts will be made during the next month or so to ensure that there isn’t any disruptions in electricity.
We are sure, for the residents of the major cities this will be a news of relief because power cuts during fasting not only creates an extra discomfort physically, but also derails a lot of other day to day operations which need to be completed within a time frame. Talking about load-shedding, it has to be admitted that the atrocious scenario of 2013 when round the clock power outages were common is now just a distant nightmare. Today, in Dhaka and in several major cities we do not get four to five power cuts, which were the norm once. Of course, there is always room for improvement. The number of electricity stoppages has reduced though this nuisance hasn’t stopped totally.
To achieve that situation will take time and more efforts to generate/import power. However, for the time being, the resolution to make life easier during Ramadan is laudable.
In order to make life comfortable for all, the government has asked all shops to be close by 8pm so pressure on the power supply from large shopping malls is reduced. A similar move was taken in the past though the times had to be extended following requests from shop owners, who regard shopping prior to Eid ul Fitr as one of their major profit making times.
A sensible compromise may be to enforce the 8pm law for the first 20 days of Ramadan and relax the time limit for the last ten days leading up to Eid. In the month of sacrifice and moderation, if concessions are made from all sides, any large scale suffering can be minimized. Let’s keep this considerate approach for the next four weeks and make Ramadan not just about forgoing food and drink, but also selfishness.
