Regular captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza is back in the action after serving a one-match ban following a slow over rate during the series in Sri Lanka as Bangladesh face off New Zealand today at Clontarf Cricket Club Ground, Dublin in their second match of the tri-nation series. The new look New Zealand are on a roll with a 51-run win over hosts Ireland even though they were made to hard work. Bangladesh’s match against Ireland was washed out after Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah Riyad kept the side on course following a top order collapse. Being reduced to 70 for four, Bangladesh batsmen’s technique in the lush green pitch of Dublin raised a question but the resoluteness with which Tamim and Riyad were playing is believed to boost Bangladesh’s confidence. The New Zealand however looks completely new with the side coming here sans some of their star players including the captain Kane Williamson. Mashrafe said the team the New Zealand got still could provide enough challenge to the other teams.“New Zealand is a professional side and also ranked higher in the ICC rankings. Although they don’t have few top grade cricketers in the side but still if you see there are many of them who played against us in the last series,” Mashrafe said yesterday after the Bangladesh’s practice session.
“We couldn’t understand in which pitch we are going to play and after losing few early wickets the way Tamim Iqbal and Riyad (Mahmudullah) batted to overcome the situation and displayed their experiences. I think that’s the reality in such conditions where you have to bounce back despite losing early wickets. We are expecting same type of pitch and in these wickets even if we lose wickets it’s still possible to score 270 to 300 runs.
We are yet to see the pitch and it depends how it behaves from the previous match and we are focused to do well.”
At the same time Mashrafe said they have taken good preparation amid the limitation of practice facilities. Ireland Cricket Board failed to provide some of the much needed facilities for the visiting team being an inexperienced country to arrange such tournament.“Obviously whenever we went out our first aim is to win the match and despite the condition and the facilities which were not up to the mark but we tried to overcome those and prepared ourselves,” he pointed out.Bangladesh though were whitewashed against New Zealand at their den few months back, the recent stat (7-4) between the two sides since 2010 is in Bangladesh’s favour. Bangladesh whitewashed New Zealand at their own den in 2010 (4-0) and 2013 (3-0).New Zealand though beat Bangladesh in 2015 World Cup, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and co also gave a run-for-the-money to co-hosts.
Lots have changed for Mortaza’s men since then. They have been on an upward spiral especially in the 50-over format, but overseas results are eagerly awaited from Bangladesh, for them to be considered as a ‘well oiled side.’
The overall head-to-head record stands in favour of Kiwis (20-8). This will be the first instance of both sides meeting at Dublin.
“We are confident and I believe and the whole team believes that those who do well has the ability to perform anywhere. The conditions may be challenging but I think our batsmen especially in the top order have the skill to deliver,” Mashrafe believed.Even though the wicket in ICC Champions Trophy is believed to be completely different to what Bangladesh get in Ireland, Mashrafe said the tri-nation series is important to have a match practice.
“It’s important for us to play and as I said we expected to play in the similar condition like England but that’s not exactly happened.  In the first match it was a grassy pitch however the batsmen can score after the early movements from the wicket but still I think the pitch is quite different comparing to England.”As Mashrafe is back in action, at least one change from the first match will be happened. The captain however said there won’t be much change.“There won’t be much change in the playing eleven where being the captain I will be playing so someone has to make way but still we did not discussed about the playing eleven yet.”
