At least one person was killed in Bhederganj of Shariatpur on Monday and two others were injured in Dhaka, as nor'westers lashed different parts of the country on Monday morning and night. The cities of Dhaka and Chittagong were hit twice, in the morning and at night, with gusty winds reaching up to 74km per hour in the capital and 98kmph in the port city, the meteorological department said.
The storms, accompanied by rain, hails and lightning, were the result of a westerly low pressure and the presence of high humidity and pre-monsoon heat, as the south-western monsoon has arrived in the Andaman Sea. The westerly low over West Bengal has a trough extending down to the Bay.
Reports said gusty winds uprooted many trees in Dhaka city at around 11-45 on Monday night. One fell onto a moving pick-up truck near the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). The driver and his helper were injured and were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital by the police.
Trees at Suhrawardy Uddayan, Ramna Park, Dhaka University campus and Hatrijheel area were uprooted during the storm.
The accompanying overnight rain, 90mm till 6am yesterday (Tuesday), left many streets waterlogged. It made life difficult for those who sleep on pavements and under high rises.
Many who sleep at Kamalapur, Tejgaon and Airport railway stations and Sadarghat river terminal found it difficult to cope with the driving rain and pelting hail stones at midnight, witnesses reported.
It was also difficult for those caught in the storm while travelling. They were in fear of flying debris and tree branches.
Debris fell from wayside high rises being built, like the one near Farmgate, whose owner did not care for adequate protective cover. A glass window fell on a passing car yesterday, perhaps loosened by the overnight rain and winds.
Earlier, at 6.30am, the city was hit by 53kmph winds and there was 37mm of rainfall.
Thundershowers with hails were reported from Hatiya, Maijdi Court, Sayedpur, Faridpur, Madaripur, Shariatpur, Patuakhali, Khepupara, Barisal, Rajshahi, Khulna and Cox’s Bazar on Monday morning or at night, the Met Office said.
But after the rainstorm, a mild to moderate pre-monsoon heat wave is in store. It may begin from Saturday.
