Operation at Rajshahi ‘militant den’ ends

Law enforcers yesterday concluded their operation 'Sun Devil' at Matikata 'militant den' in Godagari upazila in Rajshahi, reports UNB. Additional Deputy Inspector General of Rajshahi police range Nisharul Arif officially announced the end of operation at a press briefing around 12:45pm. He said diseased militant Asharul was an IT specialist and rescued two minors have been kept under police custody. Earlier in the morning police recovered 11 bombs, one pistol and two magazines from the hideout, said Hifjur Alam Munshi, officer-in-charge of Godagari Police Station. No one was found alive or dead at the militant den during today's operation, said Sumit Chowdhury, additional superintendent of Rajshahi special Branch Police.
"There are four rooms in the house and no militant was found there," said Sumit. However, a team of Crime Investigation Department (CID) reached the spot on Friday for conducting an investigation.
Earlier, the law enforcers, including a bomb disposal unit, resumed their operation at the 'militant den after a brief suspension on Friday morning.
Several rounds of gunshots were heard during the drive.
A Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) reached the spot on Thursday night for recovering explosives and the bodies of the 'militants' killed during the operation at the den on Thursday,. Five suspected militants, including a woman, and a firefighter were killed in 'suicide blasts' and gunshots fired by 'militants' as law enforcers raided the militant hideout on Thursday morning.
The firefighter was identified as Abdul Matin, 45, while five of the 'militants' were house owner Sazzad Hossain, 50, his wife Beli Begum, 40, son Al Amin, 25, daughter Karima Khatun, 17 and Ashraful, a resident of Sadar upazila in Chapainawabganj district. The bodies were sent to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital for autopsy. During the raid, police rescued two children -- Jubayer and Apiya -- from the house, said Hibjur Alam Munshi, officer-in-charge (OC) of Godagari Police Station. They are now in police custody. Later, the law enforcers postponed the operation around 8 pm on Thursday.
