BNP to take ‘Vision 2030’ to the people

Khaleda Zia has unveiled "Vision 2030", aiming to turn Bangladesh into a high-middle-income nation within the next 13 years. The BNP now plans to carry out a campaign and mass contact programme across the country to make people aware about it. The party will be holding seminars and discussions, said party leaders.
The party chairperson has placed "Vision 2030" at the right time, according to the leaders. The opinion of the people will be sought to further improve it, they said.
Talking to The Independent, the leaders said the BNP will organise seminars and discussions on key issues of "Vision 2030" to know the views of the people and also take suggestions of experts, academics, professionals and civil society members. The party will prepare its manifesto mostly based on it for the next general election, the leaders added.
Khaleda Zia announced "Vision 2030" at a press conference on Wednesday. It features 256 points under 37 sections, comprising plans and pledges, including curtailing of unilateral powers of the Prime Minister to strike a balance in the executive powers.
Standing committee member, Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, said they would organise sector-wise discussions and seminars and carry out a campaign to spread the idea behind "Vision 2030".
“The 'Vision' was prepared much before. We placed it now as we thought it is the right time,” he said. There is plenty of time for feedback from the people, he added.
The former minister said they would continue discussions on it and welcome suggestions to improve it. “Seminars and discussions will be held on issues considered important,” he added.
He said their election manifesto would be prepared on the basis of "Vision 2030".
On comments of ruling party leaders on the "Vision", the BNP leader said they are opposing it for the sake of opposing. No ruling party leader could challenge any point of "Vision 2030", he added.
Another standing committee member, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, said the party will the people know and read the party’s vision and hold discussions on it. “If there is any suggestion or recommendation, the BNP will consider it," he added.
He also said they do not expect ruling party leaders to welcome the BNP's "Vision".
The BNP leader said they would decide their next course of action at the party forum.
Replying to a question, Roy said the party’s election manifesto will not contain anything that would contradict "Vision 2030".
A BNP vice-chairman, preferring anonymity, said placing the "Vision" well ahead of the next election would give scope for the party to scrutinise it and prepare the election manifesto accordingly. “It has created an opportunity for discussions at different levels. The BNP will make corrections in the 'Vision', if necessary,” he added.
The leader said as part of the effort, the BNP is going to hold a day-long seminar at the Ladies' Club in the city today (Saturday). Five renowned university teachers—Prof. Mahbubullah, Prof. Yusuf Haider, Prof. MD Sirajul Islam, Prof. Siddiqur Rahman and Prof. Sabbir Mostafa—would present a keynote paper on the present state of the education system and its future.
Former president and Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh chief, Prof. AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury, is scheduled to attend the first session as chief guest, while BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will be the chief guest in the concluding session in the afternoon.
Pro-BNP intellectual and former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University, Prof. Emajuddin Ahmed, and BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will chair the sessions, respectively.
