Most departments under various faculties of Jahangirnagar University (JU) are facing a session backlog of at least six months despite a congenial atmosphere on the campus in recent years. No agitation and violence has affected the varsity's peaceful atmosphere since the movement against its former vice-chancellor Prof. Anwar Hossain.
During a visit to the university, The Independent found that departments under the Physical and Mathematical Science Faculty are facing a backlog of six months to one year. Of them, the computer science and engineering department and the environmental science and geological science department are behind by a year, while chemistry, statistics and mathematics departments lag behind by six months.
The pharmacy department, under the Biological Science Faculty, is a year behind schedule, while the biochemistry and molecular biology department and the biotechnology and genetic engineering department are six months behind in its academic session.
In the Business Studies Faculty, the accounting and information system (AIS) department has been found to have a backlog of one year, while the departments of marketing, management, and finance and banking are trailing by six months.
In the Arts and Humanities Faculty, history, journalism and media Studies, drama and dramatics, fine arts, and international relations departments have a six-month backlog.
The rest of the departments under different faculties are lagging least two to three months behind the general academic schedule. Moreover, inordinate delay in publication of results has become common affair. Results take almost six months to be announced when the norm is to declare them within 90 working days.
Students have expressed their concern over the session backlog without any justifiable reason. Kamrul Islam Akib, a second-year chemistry student, said: “Our final exam was to end in December last year. It’s a matter of regret that the academic programmes of the second year are yet to be finished due to a backlog.”
He described the situation as “unexpected”. “The campus has not suffered from any violence or movements for the past three years. This unexpected session jam is regrettable,” he added.
Many students have criticised the teachers for running evening courses at the expense of their regular classes and departmental activities. Rafiqul Islam, a third-year student of the computer science and engineering department, said: “Teachers are more concerned about the evening courses than the regular ones. The evening courses are being completed in time, while regular courses are lagging behind. The teachers should be more sincere about their regular classes to make up for the lost time.”
Despite the discontent among the students, the university authorities are being optimistic, saying that the situation would be set right as early as possible. JU pro vice-chancellor Prof. Abul Hossain told The Independent: “The university authorities have taken certain initiatives to overcome the backlog. We have noticed that some departments need additional two or three months because of long delays in publishing results, theses, and internship courses."
“The departments of computer science and engineering, geological sciences, and environmental sciences have developed a year’s backlog because of internal problems and a movement last year. But they are trying to make up for the lost time now,” he said.
