DU Professor Mashiur Rahman joins NU as Pro-VC
Professor of Dhaka University (DU) Sociology Department Dr Mashiur Rahman yesterday joined National University (NU) in Gazipur as Pro Vice-chancellor for next four years.
NU VC Professor Dr Md Harun-Or-Rashid, Pro-VC Professor Hafiz Muhammad Hasan Babu, Treasurer Professor Mohammad Numan-Ur-Rashid and teachers and officials of the university were present during the joining, said a NU press release here.
Later, Professor Mashiur placed wreath at the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi 32 in the capital yesterday afternoon. Earlier, NU Chancellor President Md Abdul Hamid appointed Professor Mashiur Rahman as Pro VC of NU on May 7 for next four years.
Mashiur Rahman obtained his honors and master degrees from DU Sociology Department and PhD degree from Lund University of Sweden in 2011.

Workshop on ‘Digital Library User Training’ held at UGC 
A day-long workshop titled ‘Digital Library User Training’ was held at UGC auditorium yesterday, says a press release. 
University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC) organised the workshop with the support of Taylor & Francis Group. Professor Abdul Mannan, Chairman, UGC graced the function as the chief guest. Professor Dr Md Akhtar Hossain, member, UGC presided over the workshop. Professor Dr Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah, member, UGC, Dr Gauranga Chandra Mohanta, ndc, Project Director (Additional Secretary), HEQEP and Mahmudul Islam, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Education (MoE) were special guests. Khandker Hamidur Rahman, Director, IMCT Division, UGC delivered the welcome address at the programme. The chief guest said at present, 3.2 million students are studying in 142 universities in the country. The number of students would exceed 4 million by 2030. About University Digital Library, he said that the government allocated UGC $ 240 million from a grant of the World Bank to implement the HEQEP project. 
University Digital Library is one of its components. The objectives of this project are digitizing country’s higher education and enhance connectivity among the universities. He urged concerned authorities to properly use of the project money. Professor Mannan said that Digital Library is the best way to overcome time, space and money constraints. 
He stressed the need for promoting and expediting the use of digital resources among the students, teachers and researchers to enhance their knowledge and skills to compete in today’s world.   Librarians from 72 public and private universities and research organisations of the country participated at the workshop. Senior officials from UGC, Ministry of Education, HEQEP and Bangladesh Academy of Science, among others were present on the occasion. 

Inter hall debate competition starts today at RU
A10-day long the 4th inter hall debate competition of Rajshahi University (RU) will start today. 
Shaheed Suhrawardi Hall debating club president, Md Omar Faruk, confirmed the matter through a press conference yesterday at the university’s central cafeteria. A total of 32 debating groups from 17 halls of the campus will take part in the competition and final round of the competition will be held on May 19. RU Vice-chancellor Prof Dr M Abdus Sobhan is expected to present as the chief guest and student adviser Prof Dr Mizanur Rahman and Hall council president and also Shaheed Suhrawardi Hall Provost Prof M Anisur Rahman will present as special guests.

Year-end programme of ITHS held
The year-end programme of International Turkish Hope School (ITHS) Uttara Junior Section was celebrated on Saturday at the main campus auditorium of the school on Saturday, says a press release.  
Chairman of ITHS, Bedrettin Suata, Principal Yavuz Koca, all head of Sections, respected parents and guardians were present at the programme. 
 Following the sequence of the programme, poem recitation, a French song, the recommendable dances came one after another.  The karate show was presented by students of class 3, 4 & 5, and the classic drama ‘Wizard of the Oz’ were presented flawlessly. 

Hall provost, house tutors ‘resign’ at BAU
Provost and three house tutors of Shahjalal Hall of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) in Mymensingh reportedly resigned from their posts showing personal grounds.
The incident of resignation was kept conceal although they submitted their resignation letters on Sunday. The registrar of the university Md. Saiful Islam, however, told that he did not get the resignation letters till Tuesday.
The resigned teachers are hall provost Prof Dr Md Sadiqul Islam, house tutors Debashis Sarkar Dev, Md. Masudul Karim and Shahdat Hossain. While talking about the resignation, hall provost Dr Sadiqul Islam said he will talk about the matter later. Sources said they resigned as Bangladesh Chhatra League’s alleged interference on different activities of the hall administration.  On Saturday, the BCL activists obstructed the working for the hall infrastructure development and even they drove the labourers out from the hall for some times.  Later, the hall administration sat in a discussion with the BCL activists and getting no fruitful result they decided to resign, sources added.
