Several thousands of people have been marooned due to flash floods and river erosion in Bhola, Feni, Noakhali and Chandpur districts during the last
four days. Hundreds of hectares of standing Aman crop, fish from several fish enclosures was washed away by the strong currents of the over flowing rivers.
Our correspondent from Bhola reports: Homesteads of about 200 families and 100 shops in Ilisha river
terminal area have been devoured by the River Meghna during the past two days.
Now, the pontoon of the terminal is about 200 metres away from the river bank. Sources said the ferry services in Bhola- Laxmipur route has remained suspended after one kilometre of ferry approach road was washed away by the strong currents of the river on Sunday.
Sands bags are being dumped to protect river bank from erosion.
Amir Hossain, Nur Jahan, Razia Begum and many others said the affected families have moved to safer places.
Hilsha fish trader Sayeed Ali, M.Hossain and Abu Taher said fish supply to Dhaka will be hampering seriously due to the erosion.
Following the suspension of ferry services on Bhola- Laxmipur route thousands of passengers from southern districts, who take the route to go to Dhaka, Chittagong, Comilla and Sylhet and Barisal, are suffering much.
Abu Alam Ilisha ferry ghat Manager said general manager of Bangladesh inland Water Transport Authority M. Shahadat Ali visited the spot yesterday.
Construction of ferry terminal approach road will be completed soon to resume the ferry services, he added.
Abdul Hekim, Executive Engineer of BWDB Bhola said they are dumping of sand bags to check erosion.
Our correspondent from Noakhali reports: About 50,000 people have been marooned due to flash floods and river erosion in Feni and Noakhali districts during the past four days.
A large quantity of fish has been washed away from the ponds, fish enclosures in three districts -- Noakhali, Laximpur and Feni.
Although the flood situation has improved in Feni, water from Chotto Feni River entered the new areas in Daganbhuiyan of Feni and Senbagh of Noakhali. District fisheries Officer Mosharaf Hossain said fish worth nearly Tk 60 lakh have been washed away from several dighis and ponds in Chhagalnaiya, Fulgazi and Parshurm upazilas.
On the other hand, low-lying areas in all the nine upazilas of Noakhali have been inundated by rain water that caused death to many cattle head and damage to crops.
Thousands of people have been suffering due to disruption in road communication.
Our correspondent from Chandpur adds: Life has become paralysed in Chandpur district due to heavy downpour and flash flood over the past 36 hours.
The incessant rains have flooded hundreds of hectares of standing Aman crop inside the Chandpur Irrigation Project (CIP) that covers Chandpur Sadar, Haimchar and Faridganj upazilas of Chandpur
and those of the 60 kms- long Meghna –Dhonagoda Irrigation Project and Flood Control Embankment in Matlab South and Matlab North upazilas of the district.
CIP embankment engineer Badruddin Mollah said: “Due to the continuous heavy rainfall, we can’t flush rain water from inside the embankment area through pumps at Bagadi and the Hajimara sluice gates. There are Aman crops on over 57,000 hectares of land inside the area, where about 10 lakh farmers also live. Fish in the water bodies have been washed away from the ponds and tanks, said fish farmers -- Rafique and Masud.
Same is the situation inside Meghna –Dhonagoda Irrigation Project Embankment area, where there are standing crops on over 17,000 hectares of land, said official sources.
