Thakurgaon: Boro cultivators at Ranisankail upazila have become worried as fungal disease Blast has infected rice plants in the area, reports UNB.Agriculture extension officer Mazedul Islam said unusual behaviour of weather such as cloudy sky, mist in the morning, light drizzle and increase of nitrogen in the air caused the neck blast disease.However, the farmers said, had the agriculture office given advices to them timely, they would have taken measures.While visiting several villages in the upazila, this correspondent found the farmers apprehensive as neck blast has infected most of their farmlands.
While talking to UNB, Alif, a farmer from Bangaon village, said he cultivated Boro crop in some 50 bighas of land. But, rice plants of around 25 bighas have been infected by neck blast.
Another farmer Jatin of Lehemba village said he cultivated Boro on his cropland by taking loan from a Non-government organisation (NGO).Now he feared that he would not get enough rice for consuming let alone clearing the debt.Besides, Rafiqul Miah and Mostafa Miah from Khunia Dighi Chattar; Salam of Bachore; Rafiqul Master, Ganesh and Dulal of Kalugaon village are also facing the same problem.
Farmers have cultivated Boro crop on 8,495 hectares of land this seasom.
