The number of Awami League (AL) lawmakers fell by half on the second day of a three-day workshop meant for them. The workshop, titled “Lawmakers’ role in social media”, was organized by the Centre for Research and Information (CRI) at party chief Sheikh Hasina’s new political office at Dhanmondi. The CRI is a non-profit policy research organization of the AL. The Prime Minister’s son and her ICT affairs adviser, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, inaugurated the workshop on Sunday. The aim of the meet was to give the lawmakers tips on how to make an optimum use of social media. Over 50 MPs were present on the first day. On the second day, the number fell drastically. According to the CRI, only 27 of them registered to join the workshop.
“Only around 27 lawmakers were present on the second day, though we had hoped that over 50 MPs would attend it,” the CRI assistant coordinator Tonmoy Ahmed told The Independent yesterday. “It’s true that our MPs remain busy. I believe the number will go up on the third day,” he added. However, insiders said that the number of MPs may have declined because Joy and state ICT minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak were not attending on the second day.
Inaugurating the workshop on Sunday, Joy gave party lawmakers a preliminary guideline on how to connect with people across the country and in the remote areas using social media. He asked them to be active on social media sites and to highlight the development activities undertaken by the Hasina government on their social media pages so that the young generation would know who to vote for in the next polls.
