The Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) was planning to snatch detained top militants from jail in filmi style, police sources said, after conducting primary interrogation of eight arrested militants in the city. They were hoping to snatch JMB leader Maolona Saidur Rahman and Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) chief Mufti Jashim Uddin. To implement their plan, the militants were secretly organising themselves, after renting a house in the city’s Uttara area, from where they were arrested. After arresting the JMB’s acting Ameer, Abu Talha Mohammad Fahim alias Pakhi, Md Mostafa, Md Shakhwat Ullah, Md Shafiqul Islam, Md Ruhul Amin, Md Emdadul Haque, Rafique Ahmed alias Royal, and Md Ali Ashraf Rajib from the city yesterday, Detective Branch (DB) joint commissioner Monirul Islam said they seized jihadi books, leaflets, CDs, 10 mobile phones and a motorcycle during the drive.
During primary interrogation, the militants confessed that they were planning to carry out subversive activities against notable persons and organisations, said deputy police commissioner (DB) (North), Shaikh Nazmul Alam. In the absence of his father Maolana Saidur, Abu Talha was acting as the JMB chief. There are several cases against Abu Talha in different areas in the country, including Rajshahi and Habiganj districts.
According to DC Nazmul, Abu Talha’s elder brother, Mohammad Shamim, was in jail for 10 years after he was arrested in 2005.
