To uphold the tradition of the country as one enriched with fish and rice, speakers at a function in the city yesterday urged scientists and researchers to innovate new technologies to boost fish production that will ensure food security. Divisional Commissioner (acting) of Khulna Md Faruk Hossain in his speech urged all to turn fish cultivation into a social movement as it could be very successful and effective tool for poverty alleviation. “As the fishery sector is meeting 80 percent of the total demand of animal protein, there is no alternative to fish production in large scale through optimum use of the existing water bodies,” Faruk added. The commissioner lamented that the indigenous fish species are disappearing day by day due to various reasons, including use of excessive pesticide in agriculture, use of banned current nets in the water bodies, want of fish sanctuaries and adverse impact of climate change. In this context, he urged the fish scientists, researchers and others concerned to invent sustainable methods for fish cultivation by using the changed environment and situation. The function was held in observance of the National Fisheries Week-2015.
Khulna District Fisheries Office with the help of the local administration organised the event aiming to create mass awareness about expansion of fish cultivation.
The ceremony was held at the conference room of the DC Office, Khulna in the city with Deputy Commissioner (acting) of Khulna Habibul Haque Khan in the chair. Deputy Director of the Department of Fisheries, Khulna division Md Moniruzzaman and Deputy Director (fish inspection and certification marks) of Khulna Md Abdur Rashed, vice-president of BFFEA Md Abdul Baki were present as special guests. District Fisheries Officer of Khulna Prafulla Kumar Sarkar delivered the address of welcome.
Earlier, on the occasion, a colourful procession led by Divisional Commissioner (acting) Faruk Hossain was brought out from Khulna Circuit House that paraded the main city streets and ended in front of the DC office.
District level officials, civil society members, NGO representatives, city elites, local journalists, Poultry and Fish Feed Owners’ Association members and a number of people involve in fishing and fishermen attended the function.

underscored the need for enhancing fish farming through the best uses of existing natural resources.
They stated that an enhanced fish production can be the effective means to meet protein deficiency and poverty alleviation along with employment generation. District Fisheries Office and the district administration jointly organised the discussion in the conference hall of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) marking the National Fisheries Week- 2015.
In his address of welcome, District Fisheries Officer Golam Rabbani narrated the district level fisheries extension and development activities and highlighted the potentials of the sector.
Begum Akhtar Jahana, MP, addressed the discussion as the chief guest while Divisional Deputy Director of the department Mahbubul Alam and Deputy
Commissioner-in-Charge Ataul Gani spoke as special guests with District Fisheries Officer Golam Rabbani in the chair. RCCI Director Sekendar Ali and member of Fishermen Association Faridul Islam also spoke. Referring to the immense prospect of the fisheries sector, the speakers said fish production could easily be increased to a great extent if the natural resources were utilised properly.
They recommended inspiring the farmers, providing them with latest scientific technologies and educating them in producing quality fish fries and fingerlings so that they cultivate fish more.
Akhtar Jahan called for involving more people in fish farming activities for the sake of meeting the protein demand as only fish can fulfill at least 80 percent need of the animal protein especially of the poor and marginal communities.
Taking part in the discussion, some of the fishermen stressed the need for mitigating all the existing problems being faced by the fish farmers in attaining the cherished goal.
Earlier, a colorful rally was brought out from Shaheb Bazar Zero Point and that paraded the main thoroughfares before converging on the meeting venue.
Later, the chief and special guests released fish fingerlings into the Padma River adjacent to Padma Garden in the city marking launching of the week.

stressed the need for enhancing fish production by ensuring proper utilisation of all water bodies to attain economic self-reliance by rural people after meeting nutrition demand. They called for boosting the fishery sector and preserving the extinct and indigenous fish species to increase overall production to make the country self-reliant in fish at its own and accelerate national development.
They were addressing the discussion organised at an 0auditorium in Panchagarh district town this morning
by the Fisheries Department in association with district administration on
the occasion of the National Fisheries Week-2015.
The programme also included rally, releasing fish fries at 'Nolkura Fish
Sanctuary' in the river Kartoa and various motivational activities with fresh strategies for ensuring all water bodies to further develop the highly prospective fishery sector.
