After rains today, mercury to rise again

Special Correspondent

Light showers are expected to start today and continue till May 15 or 16, coinciding with the beginning of the Bangla month of Jaishtha next Monday when it becomes hot and humid again, Met office sources said yesterday.  The rains will not be too heavy, sources said.
The rains today, which are likely to spread mostly over the northern region, will be induced by the shifting of the trough of westerly low pressure over the Indian state of Bihar and adjoining areas, moving from West Bengal but leaving its trail over the North Bay of Bengal.
Meanwhile, the country’s south-western region has been going through a hot spell since Saturday. Jessore recorded the highest temperature at 36.2 degrees Celsius on Saturday, which rose to 37.2 degrees Celsius yesterday. Yesterday’s highest temperature was 37.7 degrees Celsius at Satkhira, rising sharply from 35.6 degrees Celsius on Saturday. Similarly, the temperature in Khulna rose to 36.6 degrees Celsius yesterday from 35 degrees Celsius on Saturday. In Chuadanga, the mercury dropped a little to 35.2 degrees Celsius from the previous day’s 35.6 degrees Celsius after a 15-mm rainfall till 6am yesterday.
The situation remained the same in Rajshahi, where temperature slightly fell to 34.4 degrees Celsius yesterday from Saturday’s 35.6 degrees Celsius. But there was no shower. In nearby Ishurdi, the mercury fell to 35.3 degrees Celsius yesterday from 36 degrees Celsius on Saturday. Dhaka city recorded a maximum of 34.4 degrees Celsius yesterday and 34.2 degrees Celsius on Saturday.
