Downpour wreaks havoc in Ctg

Croplands, roads badly damaged

Recent incessant downpour has wreaked havoc on a stretch of 1287 kilometre areas of the district and city, damaging houses, croplands, fisheries, roads, bridges and culverts, despite floodwater receding. The most ravaged upazilas are Mirsarai, Raozan, Rangunia, Patiya, Chandanaish, Satkania and Banshkhali. Following the heavy shower, the district administration has already distributed 111 tonnes of rice and cash amounting to Tk 3 lakh among the worst-affected people. Although no casualty was reported, the downpour affected 34,300 families of 130 unions and eight municipalities of the district. Md Abul Basher, district relief and rehabilitation officer, paid visit to the affected upazilas of Chittagong and prepared a damage report. As per the report, 110 houses were completely ravaged while 5,146 houses were partially damaged by the downpour. Fishes of total 6891 ponds and fisheries were washed away by the downpour. Some 21.5 km paved roads and 221 km muddy roads were completely battered by the incessant shower. Besides, five km long dams were completely damaged in the downpour. The downpour also destroyed 7610 acres of farmlands completely. As many as 640 acres of shrimp enclosures were destroyed and the damage was estimated at Tk 1.28 crore. As many as 85 cattle and 60,550 poultry birds were affected causing losses of Tk8, 50,000 and Tk 14, 15,000.  Meanwhile, 85 educational institutions, including schools, colleges and madrasas in Satkania, Raozan and Hathazari upazilas were damaged due to the heavy downpour. However, Md Abul Basher,  district relief and rehabilitation officer, told The Independent that the situation in the affected areas was improving with water receding fast. “To recover from the damage, we have already distributed 111 tonnes of rice and cash amounting to Tk 3 lakh among the worst affected people of Chittagong,” said Basher.
