Man ‘kills’ wife in capital

A woman was stabbed to death allegedly by her husband in the capital's Pallabi area on Friday.
The victim was identified as Helena Akhter, 27, wife of Iman Ali, a day-labourer. The couple had been living at a rented house in the area.
Dadan Fakir, officer-in-charge of Pallabi Police Station, said Helena had an altercation with her husband over a trifling matter in the afternoon. 
At one stage, Iman stabbed her with a sharp weapon, leaving her critically injured. Helena was first taken to a local hospital and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared her dead around 4:45pm, added the OC. Police arrested Iman over the murder.

56 heirs of FFs get scholarship 

The Assistant High Commission (HC) of India distributed cheques of Taka 13.44 lakh as scholarship of the Indian government to 56 heirs of Freedom Fighters (FFs) at a ceremony in Rajshahi yesterday.
The Assistant High Commission of India organised the ceremony in association with city Muktijoddha Command for disturbing the cheques at Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) auditorium in the city.
Lawmaker Fazley Hossain Badsha addressed the ceremony as the chief guest with Assistant High Commissioner of India Abhijit Chattopadhyay in the chair.

Reception to 2,049 students
Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) in the city yesterday accorded reception to 2,049 students, who obtained GPA-5 in Primary School Certificate and other equivalent examinations from the city's schools in 2015.
RCC organised the reception ceremony at its Green Plaza and gave medals to each of the students.
Addressing the function as the chief guest, city Mayor Mosaddeque HussainBulbul urged the students to groom themselves properly to build a happy and prosperous Bangladesh. 
Terming the students as the future leaders of the nation, he said they should be well equipped with scientific and information and communication technological based knowledge to face the challenges of the 21st century.

Examinee commits ‘suicide’ 
A Dakhil examinee, who failed to pass this year's Dakhil Examination, reportedly committed suicide in Rajfulbaria Bhorari area of Savar on Friday noon.
Md Mamun, sub-inspector (SI) of Savar Model Police Station, said Popy Akhter, 17, daughter of Mujibur Rahman, hailed from Pashchim Begunbari village of Thakurgaon Sadar upazila, used to live with her sister and brother in-law in the area. 
She hanged herself with the beam of the house when her family members went to their workplaces in the morning as she could not bear the pain of failure in the exam. On information, police recovered the body from the house at noon and sent it to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for an autopsy.

Fraud gang member held   
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members arrested a suspected member of a fraud gang from Uttara area in the capital on Thursday evening.
Sources at the RAB-1 battalion headquarters said the arrestee, Md Arifuzzaman Shiblo, 35, used to take money from people alluring them of giving jobs in government and private organisations, including bank. 
Based on the allegation, an operational team of the Rab-1, led by its senior Assistant Director Md Moinul Islam, carried out a drive in an apartment at Esha Kha Evenue of Uttara Sector-6 and arrested Shiblo at around 6:25 pm, said operation officer senior ASP Md Muhit Kabir Serniabat of the Rab-1.

Acid burnt worker succumbs
A port handling worker, who sustained severe burn injuries while loading a drum of acid into a truck, succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) on Thursday afternoon after fighting with death for 14 days.
The diseased Yakub Ali, 40, son of Ahad Ali of Putkhali union of sadar upazila, was also a member of workers' union, deputy director of Benapole port, Aminul Islam said. 
Earlier on April 20, Iakub received severe burn injuries while he along with other workers was loading drums of acid liquor into a truck in the port area, he said.
Accidentally, one of the acid-loaded drums fell on the ground and exploded, leaving Iakub and his fellow worker Ashraf Ali injured seriously, he added.

Son reportedly kills mother 
A woman was beaten to death allegedly by her mentally ill son at Faridpur village in Rajshahi on Thursday.
Locals said Bani Israil, 35, a mentally ill son of Habibur Rahman, beat his mother Serina Begum, 52, and father with a bamboo stick around 8 pm, leaving Serina dead on the spot and Habib injured.
Habib was taken to Godagari Upazila Health complex.
On information, police recovered the body of Serina and sent it to Sadar Hospital morgue.
Police also took Israil into custody, said Hifzur Alam Munshi, officer-in-charge of Godagari Police Station.

Schoolboy drowns in Sylhet
A schoolboy drowned in the Piyain River in the district on Friday noon.
Jahangir Hossain Sarder, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Goainghat Police Station, said that Sri Liton Goyala, 12, son of Sri Niranjan Goyala, and a class VIII student of Radhanagar Dr Ali High School, drowned in the river while swimming along with his friends. 
On information, a team of divers of Fire Service and Civil Defense in Sylhet rushed to the spot and recovered the body from the river in the evening, added the OC.
