The flood situation in the country’s south-eastern region of Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, southern Chittagong and Feni is going to improve in the next 24 hours, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said in its
bulletin yesterday. After heavy spells of the past few days, along with the onrush of water down the hills from across the border, the rain started petering out, helping the situation to improve. But the rain is likely to return in the next couple of days, particularly in the Cox’s Bazar region, Aifuzzaman Bhuiya, an FFWC official, told The Independent.
At least five people, including a child and three women, were killed in landslides early on Monday.
The floods brought havoc in the entire south-east, snapping road links of Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban with the rest of the country.
In Feni, embankments were breached at several places by a swelling Muhuri and its tributary, Mahua, fed by rain in the hills across the border.
But, reports said, the water started receding from the area yesterday.
Met office sources, however, said there is a forecast for heavy to very heavy rain in the next 24 hours, beginning at 6:00pm yesterday.
The depression over the north Bay of Bengal may turn into a land depression and trigger more showers.
Met office projections said it is likely that the rain would decrease after five days.
