It is a welcome piece of news that the government is going to bring all the districts of the country under railway network. To this end the railway ministry has planned to split the present two zones into four zones. Once materialized, two new zones, North and South, will add to the existing East and West Zones. If managed properly with intelligent plan, necessary funding and manpower, this effort can lift the country’s present railway service to a better state. According to the report, the East Zone will be comprised of Chittagong and Sylhet divisions while the West will be constituted with Pakshi and Lalmonirhat, North with Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions, and Khulna division and Rajbari district will be under the South Zone.
For many a reason, expansion of railway for Bangladesh has become essential. For swifter and safer transport, railway remains attractive to people, all over the world. It has also not lost its romantic appeal. Though in Bangladesh trains are rather slow, people still prefer trains because the journey is fairly safe and now a little bit cheaper than the bus journey. Train fare was greatly enhanced two times in the recent years without any improvement in the service, though railway authorities promised a lot in this regard.
In fatal road accidents, Bangladesh is on the top of the list; and many people avoid journey by bus simply because trains are rather safe. Railway technology has greatly advanced and there are many countries around the world where super speed trains run with speed about 300 kilometers per hour or more. In these countries many people prefer trains to even air travel. But here in Bangladesh trains cannot raise its speed above 55/60 kilometers per hour because of weak railway infrastructure including rail line. That is why strongly laid double rail lines through major routes of the country are the demand of the time. Making the train speedier, this would cut down the passenger’s travel time.
Railway in Bangladesh should not have been a losing concern. It is the railway staff who are mostly responsible. Though there are some people who board on train without a ticket and bribe the relevant people inside the train, passengers in general are ready to pay money if they are offered comfortable and speedier trains. Besides expansion of the rail network, rail authorities ought to work in that direction.
