The Japan International Cooperation Association (JICA) has confirmed that it will be financing Bangladesh's first Metro Rail project, according to a press release issued by ministry of road transport and bridges yesterday (Tuesday). Senior vice-president of JICA, Hideaki Domichi, and road transport and bridges minister, Obaidul Quader, singed the mutual agreement at JICA’s headquarters in Japan. The 20.1km elevated railway tracks will be built on the Uttara-Motijheel route via Pallabi and Sonargaon Hotel. In the first phase, 11km of railway tracks will be laid on the Pallabi-Motijheel route. The whole project will be implemented in three phases, ministry sources said.
Metro Rail, the country’s second largest infrastructure project after the Padma bridge, became uncertain when the proposed rail route was modified for the second time following an objection from the Air Force.
