Nashid Kamal will perform at a musical programme at the Sufia Kamal Auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum (BNM), Shahbag in the capital today. BNM has organised the music show as a part of its regular cultural programme.
Dr Nashid Kamal is a musician, academician and writer, all three in one. She got her PhD from UK in 1996 in Statistics and taught in Dhaka University for 31 years. She was Chairman of the Department of Public Health, North South University.
Grand daughter of legendary Bangladeshi musician Abbasuddin Ahmed, Nashid Kamal has been an outstanding exponent of Nazrul Geeti, semi-classical and folk music and Urdu ghazals in Bangladesh for over four decades. She trained in classical music under Ustads Akhter Shadmani, PC Gomes and Pandit Jasraj of India. She took tutelage under her aunt Ferdausi Rahman and Uncle Mustafa Zaman Abbasi all through her life, ghazals from Kader Zamiree and Nazrul songs from Sudhin Das.
Among her notable performances are, she has sung in the inaugural session of Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata (1989), Wembley Arena, London and solo performances, including foreign songs in Japan, Canada, USA (Fobana), India, Kenya, Zambia, Pakistan and Europe. She has received Channel i best artist award in Nazrul songs in 2011. Apart from her other prizes, she has received the Nazrul Institute Award (for music and translation) in 2014.
