At least seven activists of Bangladesh Chhatra league (BCL), the student affiliate body of ruling Awami League, were injured in a clash between two rival party factions of Chittagong University (CU) unit over seating on the university shuttle train yesterday.
The clash took place in front of Amanat Hall at around 2:30 pm.
Four among the injured were identified as Jaman Noor, a student of Statistics Department, Mehedi Hasan Uzzal of Communication and Journalism Department, SM Masum of History Department, Abu Bakkor of Public Administration Department. All of them are followers of HM Fazly Rabbi Sujon, general secretary of CU BCL unit, said sources.
Three others injured – Saiful, a student of Accounting Department and Ashik of Banking department, Nafi of Law Department are known as follower of CU BCL president Md Alamgir Tipu.
Sources said, at around 1:45pm, SM Masum, a follower of Fazly Rabbi Sujon, was going to the city on the shuttle train. But some follower of Alamgir Tipu came there and asked him to give up the seat. As he did not comply, they beat him. When the news spread among followers of Fazly Rabbi, they locked in an altercation with followers of Alamgir Tipu in front of Amanat Hall and Shahjalal Hall. Groups threw stones at each other and engaged in scuffles.
Md Shahidul Alam Shaheen, assistant proctor of CU said, “After hearing this news we rushed to the spot along with police to bring the situation under control. Now the situation is calm.” “Seven activists were injured in the clash. To avert further clashes, additional law enforcers have been deployed on the campus,” said Md Belal, officer in-charge (OC) of Hathazari Police Station.
The two rival groups were seen taking up positions in their halls, one in Shahjalal Hall and another in Shah Amanat Hall at around 5:45pm yesterday and a tense situation was prevailing on the campus following the clash.
