The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has declared mobile phone operator Robi Axiata Limited as the sponsor of the Bangladesh team for the next two years further after they emerged as the highest bidder in the financial proposal submission for the sponsorship rights yesterday.
The cricket apex body set a floor price of BDT 60 crore for the national sponsorship rights which according to BCB Marketing and Commercial Committee chairman Kazi Inam Ahmed, Robi has successfully crossed. He however didn’t disclose the amount the Robi offered to win the rights.
Robi was the sponsor of Bangladesh national team in the previous two years also but last time media planning company Top of Mind assigned the sponsorship rights to Robi after becoming the highest bidder.
The tenure of the Robi for this time starts after the ICC Champions Trophy and they will continue till the 2019 World Cup.
Kazi Inam Ahmed said Robi and Pran took part in the bidding process. Though the name of the Grameenphone, Meghna Group and Bkash was surfaced, eventually they were not in the process.
“Robi has crossed the floor price set by us and thereby they were awarded the rights,” said Inam Ahmed.
“They have been supporting us for the last two years. Hopefully it will continue.”
The floor price was double than the last time when it was only BDT 30 crore. Inam said the performance of the Bangladesh team increased the value of the sponsorship.
Robi CEO Kazi Mahtab Uddin Ahmed said their relation with BCB will work better this time around.
“We are thankful to BCB who is working hard to make the team successful. We are also trying to give the country the best network. Hopefully our relation will live long.”
BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury said Robi filled every requirements that the BCB needed and for that they were awarded the rights. He also spoke about the match fee of Bangladesh female cricketers in the domestic league, which is set for BDT 600 only. It created a huge criticism after the news came into the light.
“If you compare the budget of our women’s team with other countries, you will see that we won’t give them less than what the others gave. Yes there is some lacking in some particular area but we’ll try to solve it. Aside that we have been continuing with foreign staffs for the women’s team for the last four years. We have been giving them facilities and every year we are increasing that.”
