Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) seized two Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) worth around Tk 4.50 crore from a workshop in Muradpur area of Chittagong early yesterday, on charge of evading taxes.
“Acting on a tip off, we have seized two vehicles, a Mercedes Benz jeep and a Mercedes Benz Car, from a garage in Muradpur area,” said Dr Moinul Khan, Director General of CIID.
“The two vehicles were being run on the streets using fake registration numbers. The SUV is owned by some Biswasit, and the car is owned by some Youvraj,” said Moinul.
“The owners brought the two SUVs at the workshop for servicing,” said Moinul quoting the workshop owner Md Jamshed.
“Mohammad Mansur Ali and Md Asharaful Islam brought the two SUVs from England under carnet facilities (tax free facilities for tourist for a certain period) through the Chittagong port. But the owners did not return the vehicles after that specific period,” said Dr Moinul.
“As they did not return the vehicles, the government was deprived of revenue,” he said.
He also said the owners might have abandoned the vehicles at the workshop in the name of servicing as the CIID is continuing drives across the country against such vehicles.
