‘Cooperate to reduce poverty’

Comilla: LGRD and cooperative Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Wednesday said mutual cooperation and sharing experiences can play a role in alleviating poverty in the Asia-Pacific countries, reports UNB.
The Minister came up with the remarks while addressing a function inaugurating the 32nd meeting of the technical committee of the Centre for Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (Cirdap), held at Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development (BARD), in Comilla.
The people of the Asia-Pacific countries can adopt the ‘One House One Farm’ project of Bangladesh as a role model for removing poverty, Mosharraf said.
The 32nd meeting of the technical committee of Cirdap is being organised for achieving the Sustainable Development Goal in the Cirdap countries, increasing mutual cooperation among the member countries and sharing experiences about the efforts taken in poverty reduction. BARD Director General Muhammad Maududur Rashid Safdar presided over the function. Secretary of LGRD and Cooperative Ministry, Ananda Chandra Biswas, president of the 31st Cirdap technical committee and director Aziza Binte Ahmed and Cirdap director general Tevita Gadrulevu Boseiwaqa Taginavulau were, among others, present on the occasion.

Farmer killed over land dispute
OUR CORRESPONDENT, Mymensingh

A farmer was killed over land dispute at village Chang Palasia in Phulpur upazila of Mymensingh yesterday morning. 
The deceased was Abdur Razzaq, 50, of Chang Palasia. 
Quoting local people and family members, Ali Ahmed Mollah, officer-in-charge of Phulpur police station said Razzaq had a long standing dispute over a piece of land with his neighbour Jalal Uddin. 
The land was under the possession of Razzaq and he had been cultivating it for some five years, said the OC.
When Razzaq went to the disputed land to harvest Boro paddy yesterday, Jalal along with his men reached the spot and asked Razzaq not to harvest the paddy. 
They engaged in a quarrel over the issue. At one stage, Jalal and his men allegedly started beating up Razzaq with sticks, leaving him injured critically. He died on the spot, the OC said. On information, police rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. Soon after the incident, police detained Jalal’s son Delwar Hossain and cousin Mokku Mia for their alleged involvement in the killing. No case was lodged until writing of this report.

4 Shibir men held in Comilla
Comilla: Police arrested four activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, from a house in Brahmanpara upazila on Wednesday, reports UNB. 
The arrestees are Shahin Alam, 27, Ishak Bhuiyan, 24, Hizbullah, 18, and Omar Faruk, 22. They hail from different parts of the district.
Tipped off, police conducted a drive at a house of Abdul Khalek and arrested them while holding a clandestine meeting around 7 pm, said Shahjahan Kabir, officer-in-charge (OC) of Brahmanpara Police Station. Police also recovered some anti-government leaflets from their possession, the OC said.

Minor boy electrocuted 
Jessore: A 10-year-old boy was electrocuted at Chaulia village in Sadar upazila on Wednesday night, reports UNB.
Locals said Mehdi Hasan, 10, a class III student of Chaulia Government Primary School and son of Matier Rahman, came in touch a live wire while turning the TV switch on at night. He was taken to Jessore General Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

27 gamblers held in Magura
MAGURA: Police in a drive held a total of 27 gamblers with 8 courtesans in Mahammadpur upazila of the district early yesterday, reports BSS.
Three police men were injured by the gamblers in the drive. Police recovered 38 motorcycles without licenses from the gambler’s possessions.
Officer-in-Charge of Mahammadpur Thana Torikul Islam said on information they conducted a raid at the village Kalishangkorpur of the upazila and held them in the early hours of today. The gamblers tried to escape attacking police but they failed, he added.
