A court in Manikganj sentenced two men to life term imprisonment and fined Tk 1,00,000 on the charge of raping a girl.
After hearing all the records and witnesses, judge of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Hasina Rowshon Jahan handed down the verdict in absence of the convicts.
The convicts are Manik alias Moija, of Dolla Dokhinpara village and Abul, of Dolla Uttorpara in Singair upazila of the district.
The prosecution stated that on May 6 in 2003, victim Firoja Begum along with her two sisters Nur Bhanu and Hasina, were returning their house from Bastha Bus Stand. When they reached near Bastha graveyard the accused persons forcibly took her to a sugarcane field where they raped her one after another.
Hasina and her sister Nur Bhanu fled to their house and informed the locals. Local people rushed to the spot and rescued the victim.
Later, a case was filed with Singair police station accusing four people named Manik, Abul, Kala and Khaleque. The investigation officer of the case submitted charge sheet against them. Among the convicts Kala Mia died on March 6, 2006.
Abdul Khaleque, who was acquitted of the charges as the allegation was not proved against him. The punishment of the fugitives will be effective one after another from the day of their arrest or surrender.
Special public prosecutor of the court Advocate AKM Nurul Huda Rubel defended state and Advocate Helal Uddin Ahamed defended the accused people.
