Marginal women in income generation

Unlike the women living in towns and cities, rural women have very limited opportunity for earning

The poor people who are coming out of the vicious cycle of poverty through their strenuous efforts deserve appreciation. It is heartening to note that women of more than 8,500 poor and extreme poor households have developed 214 chicken rearing societies and generating income in Rajshahi region, according to a report in this newspaper on Wednesday. Around 700 Local Service Providers (LSPs) are delivering requisite training, advice and inputs services to the producers on chicken rearing. Public institutions and agencies also provide extension services to the LSPs.
Women constitute half of the total population of the country; its development greatly depends on them. But only numerical strength will not do if their participation in the mainstream development activities is not ensured. There is no denying the fact that women are going ahead defying various limitations confronting them. Their exposure to the different sectors of life, particularly the RMG industry, has opened up a wide avenue for them. This has helped them achieve solvency for them and provide economic support to their families.
Unlike the women living in towns and cities, rural women have very limited opportunity for earning. A significant number of women are confined to household chores alone. Vast womenfolk in rural areas of the country are still leading sub-human life due to abysmal poverty, illiteracy, curse of early marriage, pangs of premature motherhood and dowry. Deserted by husbands, many hapless women have to earn for survival. In many cases fair wages and remunerations elude them. It is the responsibility of the authorities concerned for ensuring proper wages for them.
Scores of women are still suffering due to violence perpetrated on them by their male counterparts. Gender discrimination has bedeviled many a woman. The present government has done a lot for the improvement of the lot of women but much more should be done. The unemployed educated young women should be imparted training, particularly on computer operating and ICT, throughout the country for expanding their job opportunities.
Those who are not educated should be given training on poultry farming, cattle rearing and similar other jobs.  In this way the unemployment problem facing them can be solved greatly. Small women entrepreneurs should be provided with loans on easy terms and conditions.  The NGOs, community leaders, human rights’ activists and religious leaders can come forward for ensuring large-scale participation of women in the development process. If it is done they can contribute positively to GDP growth.
