May to feature cyclones, nor’westers, heat waves

Special Correspondent

The above average rainfall of April, which created meteorological history by triggering early flash floods in the north-eastern rivers and haors, is expected to slow down in the month of May, which should have normal rains. May weather is going to feature normal showers, windy days with nor’westers over the north, north-eastern and central regions, and hot days, with heat waves ranging from severe to mild over the north/north-west and mild to moderate ones elsewhere across the country.
There is likely to be a low pressure brewing a cyclone in the Bay of Bengal, a long-range forecast for May by the meteorological department said yesterday.
The forecast was prepared after a meeting of experts at the Met Office yesterday, which reviewed April’s weather. Meanwhile, April rainfall—which was more than 106.2 per cent higher than the average in 50 years—sent the north-eastern rivers into spate. Coupled with the onrush of water down the hills across the borders, which swept across the rice bowls in the region’s wetlands, known as haors, it destroyed thousands of tonnes of Boro rice waiting to be harvested.
The rains were so heavy and so early in April that, rather than coming in the third week of May—when the harvest is over—they destroyed not only the annual harvest, but also the wetlands’ fisheries, killing the brood fish at the time of spawning. This has imperilled the livelihoods of the region’s farmers and fishermen.
An official of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), Sazzad Hossain, said the rivers and swollen haors were retreating yesterday in the north-eastern districts that were battered by flash floods, as the rains have slowed down.
