Safety of labourers stressed

The historic May Day was observed in port city Chittagong, Rajshai and Khulan cities amid demand for a new salary structure for workers, ensuring their justified rights and demanding their safety in workplaces, reports BSS.
Different political parties, trade unions and Readymade Garment (RMG) workers organisations observed the day through various programmes, which included discussions, rallies, human chains, processions and cultural functions of their respective cities.
The day was a public holiday.
In Chittagong, trade unions, professional groups and socio-political organisations have taken up various programmes to observe the day and press for improving the working conditions with better wages and security for the workers.
Apart from different places in the city, workers of industrial belts and its outskirts including Sitakunda, Fouzderhat, Patenga, Nasirabad, Biyazeed, Karnaphuli and Kalurghat also held rallies, processions and organized cultural programmes marking the day.
The workers carried placards and festoons and chanted slogans in favour of their rights, full wages and other facilities. Workers in the transport sector abstained from work, as usual, on the May Day which leads to the sufferings of city dwellers as well as passengers of long distance routes.
Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, MP, addressed the function as the chief guest. Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong Mohammad Shamsul Arefin addressed the function as special guest. Entrepreneurs, representatives of trade union organizations and government officials took part in the discussion.
To mark the day, Khulna Divisional Labour Office, Mill-Factory and Organisation Inspection Office, Labour Welfare Centre and Industry Relation Institution of Khulna (IRI) jointly organised a discussion meeting held at the Divisional Labour Office in the city.
Lawmaker of Khulna-2 constituency Mizanur Rahman Mizan addressed the meeting as the chief guest while joint director of labour (JDL) Akhtar Hossain Khan was in the chair.
Earlier, a colourful procession was begun led by the additional
divisional commissioner (Revenue) Md. Faruk Hossain, from city's New Market Area that paraded in Khulna-Dhaka highway and ended at the Labour Office.
In observation of the day, district administration and Divisional office of the Labour Directorate jointly organized a post-rally discussion at Rajshahi Medical College auditorium.
Commissioner of Rajshahi division Noor-Ur-Rahman addressed the discussion as chief guest with Aminul Haque, Joint Director of Department of Labour and Registrar of Trade Unions, in the chair. Deputy Commissioner Kazi Ashraf Uddin and Principal of Industries Related Institute Monirul Haque also spoke.
Terming the working class as the driving force of the national economy, the speakers said development of a nation is not possible without the development of condition of the working class.
They also laid emphasis on greater unity among the working people to establish their legal rights.
Commissioner Noor-Ur-Rahman stressed the need for the safety of the labors at their respective working places and reduction of child labors so that they can grow up as healthy citizens of the country.
He also mentioned that the present government has contributed a lot for their welfare in enhancing the salary of the labors particularly in the garments sector and also trying to make their work place safer.
Besides, local units of bus, truck, minibus, tempo and mishuk labourers unions took out separate processions which paraded the main city streets. The procession was followed by discussion and milad mahfil at their offices.
The leaders and members of the Imarat Nirman Shramik Association of Bangladesh (INSAB) brought out a procession that paraded the city streets which was also followed by a milad mahfil at its office.
Local unit of Jatiya Shramik Federation organised a rally in the city marking the day and held a discussion meeting on Sadharan Public Library premises highlighting the importance of the day.
Apart from this, different political parties including Bangladesh Awami League and working groups brought out colourful rallies, held discussions and cultural functions to mark the day in the city.
