The BNP has suggested that the government should take the issue of Teesta water sharing with India to the United Nations.
At the same time, the Khaleda Zia-led party clarified that it was not anti-India, but the interest of Bangladesh and its people always came first.
“Should we be described as anti-India if we demand our share of water from our neighbour? Indeed, we were never anti-India or against Indians, but it doesn’t mean that we'll not speak up on issues that go against the interest of Bangladesh,” BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a book launching ceremony at Dhaka Reporters Unity yesterday.
“There are international laws on sharing of waters of common rivers. If necessary, the government should take the issue to the UN so that we can get our fair share of Teesta waters,” he added.
The BNP leader said it was regretful on the part of India to open the dams upstream, causing a surge in water and submerging vast regions of Bangladesh.
Fakhrul alleged that the Prime Minister had failed to bring back anything concrete from her recent visit to India. “The government has failed to protect the interests of the country and its people,” he claimed.
“We'll obviously criticise the government if it fails to protect our rights, since it is responsible for protecting people’s rights,” he added.
Demanding a level playing field for the national election, the BNP leader asserted that his party wanted a change of power through elections and not by other means. “The government has to create a congenial atmosphere for the election by giving us space for poll-related activities and permission to hold rallies,” he said.
Fakhrul claimed that there was a sense of insecurity in the country and people were being killed indiscriminately. “But the victims are not getting any justice,” he added.
The Ziaur Rahman Research Council organized the function to launch a website and a book on Ziaur Rahman. Council president Mahtabuddin Jimi presided over the meeting.
