Describing sound pollution as a great threat for environment and public health, Environment and Forests Minister Anwar Hossain Manju on Wednesday urged the city dwellers to be active to check it, reports UNB.
Addressing a rally, he also lamented that although permission is required for any programme that may create sound pollution, many do not pay any heed to it.
The Department of Environment (DoE) arranged the rally titled ‘Sound Awareness Rally’ in front of MPs' Hostel at Manik Mia Avenue marking the International Noise Awareness Day. The noise awareness day is observed on the last Wednesday of April every year, said a DoE release.
The minister also inaugurated a signpost of silence area at the intersection between Manik Mia Avenue and Mirpur Road.
Deputy Minister for Environment and Forests Abdullah Al Islam Jakob said horn of vehicles, construction work and sound of factories are mainly responsible for noise pollution in the city. “Those are creating the sound pollution are also its victims.”
The government is implementing various programmes to control the noise pollution, he said.
DoE Director General Md Raisul Alam Mondal said they have already distributed sound level metres among DoE field-level officials, staff of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority and police.
The government officials and employees have also been trained up to enhance capacity over controlling sound pollution, he added.
Mondal said surveys were conducted in the country's eight divisional cities to measure sound pollution and mark noise pollution-affected places there.
