The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is going to organise workers' conferences of its 77 district units from next week to know the views of grassroots-level leaders on what should be the party’s next course of action, according to leaders. The BNP, that had boycotted the January 5, 2014 elections, has chosen this method before finalising the strategy for movements and elections. The party is more cautious this time. Two previous movements before and after the polls were disastrous for the party, said the leaders. The party high command has asked the heads of 51 teams, formed earlier, to tour all the organisational districts and submit reports to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on the overall situation of the party units in each district and views of grassroots-level leaders by May 7. Some leaders think that the central leaders would show the green light to the lower-rung leaders to get ready both for movements and the next elections much ahead of the scheduled poll time, said the leaders.
The leaders argued that the BNP should make all-out preparations, as many of them think that the Awami League-led government might go for early elections by the middle of next year.
As per the Constitution, the next general election is to be held within 90 days before January 28, 2019.
The BNP secretary-general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, at a meeting at the party headquarters yesterday (Tuesday) briefed heads of the party teams about their task during their visits.
“The task of organising conferences at district levels has been started with a briefing by the party secretary-general,” said standing committee member, Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain. He hoped that the conferences at district levels would begin in full-swing next week.
“I will meet my team leaders on Thursday to fix the date of conferences in Chittagong that I will attend,” he said. Describing their visits to the districts as organisational, the former minister said all organisational and political issues, including the next course of action for restoration of democracy and election, may come up at the conferences. “I think this will rejuvenate the party rank and file at the grassroots level,” he added.
Another standing committee member, Lt. Gen. (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, said the initiative can be treated as a preparatory move for the next general election.“It will help the party to be stronger at the grassroots level by encouraging the party rank and file,” he said. The joint secretary-general, Advocate Mojibur Rahman Sarwar, said they would record the opinion of grassroots-level leaders on the next course of action and participation in the elections.
This initiative will bring back trust and faith among the rank, and encourage them to go ahead with new vigour, he said.
He said he would hold a conference in Bhola sometime next week in consultation with district leaders.
The BNP publicly secretary, Shaheeduddin Chowdhury Anie, said the district conferences would cover all issues, including movements and the election, along with organisational matters.
He described it as a political programme and said they would submit reports to the party chairperson by May 7 on the overall situation in the districts.
The BNP has formed 51 teams with senior leaders to strengthen its organisational capacity across the country and rejuvenate the rank and file, before hitting the streets with its demand for holding the next polls under a neutral administration.
The BNP senior joint secretary general, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, came up with the disclosure at a press conference at the party's Nayapaltan central office. The BNP leader said the 51 teams will oversee the activities of the party’s 75 organisational districts and give them necessary directions to reinforce their activities.
Of the 51 teams, the BNP secretary-general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, was given charge of Dhaka North, South and Manikganj units, while standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain got Chittagong city and its South and North units; Mirza Abbas, Barisal city and its South and North units, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Rajshahi city and district units, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Noakhali and Laxmipur units, and Amir Kharsu Mahmud Chowdhury, Sylhet city and district units.
