Voting for elections to three municipalities -- Meherpur and Beanibazar in Sylhet, and Maksudpur in Gopalganj; and 14 Union Parishads in Banshkhali Upazila of Chittagong – ended mostly peacefully with stray incidents of violence in Chittagong, reports UNB.
Three people sustained bullet injuries in a clash between the supporters of two chairman candidates at a polling centre during union parishad polls at Katharia union in Banshkhali upazila of Chittagong.
Locals said an altercation ensued between the followers of Awami League chairman candidate Ibne Amin and party rebel contestant Joynal Abedin near Dakkhin Bagmara Government Primary School polling centre around 12:45 pm.
At one stage, both groups exchanged gunfire, leaving three people, including a 10-year-old girl, injured with bullets.
Munir Hossain Khan, election officer of Chittagong region, said voting at the poling centre was suspended for half an hour following the incident.
Mohammad Rezaul Masud, additional superintendent of Chittagong police, said the injured were taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital and additional security measures were taken at the centre following the clash.
The balloting began at 8am and continued till 4pm without any break.
Besides, voting for by-elections to two ward councillor posts of two municipalities, two ward councillor posts of Comilla City Corporation and member posts of six district councils, was also held.
Balloting in two polling stations of Comilla City Corporation was postponed during the recently held election.
