Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover

Digging and re-digging of city roads time and again without any rhyme or reason are causing immense sufferings to the people
Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover

With a plan to ease traffic in one of the city's busiest areas, the construction work on the integrated Moghbazar-Mouchak Flyover Project began in January 2013, but the awfully slow pace in its implementation and careless attitude of the construction firm is taking heavy toll on the commuters and residents of the area in both dry and rainy seasons over the last four years, according to a report in this newspaper on Monday.
The situation now has taken a turn for the worse in the capital's Shantinagar, Mouchak and Malibagh areas as the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) are also carrying out development works digging up roads beneath the under-construction flyover.
Over the past few years, Dhaka city has expanded both horizontally and vertically with its burgeoning population but civic amenities have not increased proportionately. Exposure to road dust, mud and garbage has become the menaces that the city-dwellers are confronted with regularly. Construction work-related activities like road digging, concrete crushing, cement batching and road stone plants are destroying the environment and clean air, depriving the city-dwellers of breathing fresh air.
Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover project is generating huge amount of dust every day. The works of the project are going on at a snail’s space. Date for completion of the project has been extended time and again. People passing by it are exposed to dust pollution everyday. The construction materials, stone chips and cement lying here and there are causing dust. Severe traffic jam near the flyover is a regular feature.
Digging and re-digging of city roads time and again without any rhyme or reason are causing immense sufferings to the people. Thousands of people have to go out of their residences everyday for various purposes. They are bearing the brunt of dust pollution as the authorities concerned have taken no measure to check it.
How long can the people suffer? For a few weeks, or for a few months it is acceptable. But suffering for years together is not acceptable. Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover project has been causing suffering for the last four years. There is a lack of coordination among different government bodies. There is no dearth of shifting blame on each other for the suffering of the people. The apathy and lackadaisical attitude of some vital organizations are very unfortunate. It is the responsibility of the city corporations and other relevant bodies to expedite works of various projects so that those do not invite public suffering.
