The BNP is moving step by step towards collapse and not towards state power, said Awami League (AL) joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif yesterday. Hanif’s remark came in response to a statement by BNP vice-chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu on Friday that his party was heading towards state power step by step. “The reality is that the BNP-led 20-Party Alliance will form the government in the next one-and-a-half years while the AL-led 14-party alliance will be sitting in the opposition benches (in Parliament),” Dudu had said. Countering Dudu’s claim, Hanif said: “The BNP need not dream of getting back to power anymore as the people will never vote for them. The party indulged in wrong politics and killed the people by hurling petrol bombs during their three-month-long anti-government movement in 2015.”
The AL leader said this in his address to the biennial conference of the Bangladesh Postmen and Postal Employees Union at the GPO auditorium in the city. Hanif further said BNP leaders were making such baseless claims after seeing the country’s progress under the Sheikh Hasina government. “Global leaders are honouring Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as the country is fast progressing under her dynamic leadership,” he added.
“The AL-led 14-Party Alliance would form the government again with the mandate of the people in the 2019 general election as our government has been working relentlessly for the betterment of the people,” he said. Hanif said the AL wanted all parties to participate in the next general election. AL labour affairs secretary Habibur Rahman Riaz, Bangladesh Post Office director general Sushanto Kumar Mondol, Jatiya Sramik League president Shukkur Mahmud, Sramik League executive president Fazlul Haque Mantu and general secretary Sirajul Islam, among others, addressed the function.
