AFP, MOSCOW: Spartak Moscow's charge to a first Russian league title in 16 years suffered a setback Saturday after a 3-0 defeat at Rostov in which skipper Denis Glushakov was sent off.
A brace by forward Alexander Bukharov and a goal by skipper Alexandru Gatcan set Rostov on their way to a well-deserved win, which lifted them into fifth.
Spartak skipper Glushakov dashed his side's slim hopes of saving the day when he was sent off with 15 minutes to go.
Spartak still remain top of the league table, seven points ahead of city rivals CSKA who won 2-0 at Ufa on Friday.
Zenit beat eight-man Ural Yekaterinburg 2-0 and sit third a point further back.
“Our biggest mistake is that we began to think that we've already completed the quest,” Spartak manager Massimo Carrera said.
Bukharov lifted Rostov after 23 minutes off a pinpoint Timofei Kalachev right wing cross, with Gatcan firing under the crossbar in the first-half injury time.
Bukharov got the third five minutes after the break off a razor-sharp Christian Noboa pass.
Elsewehere, former Chelsea back Branislav Ivanovic and Yohan Mollo fired Zenit to a win over visitors Ural, who had three players sent off, in the first match at their newly-built St Petersburg arena.
