Lack of initiative, says minister

The minister for housing and public works, Mosharraf Hossain, asserted yesterday that water-logging in the port city of Chittagong was “not a problem”, merely the result of a lack of initiative on the part of the leaders to resolve the issue.
“I see that Mohiuddin Choudhury and Manjurul Alam were the mayors. The current mayor, too, did not take any initiative to resolve the port city’s water-logging. Finally, I myself have decided to take the initiative so that it can bring good results for Chittagong. I have already talked to the minister concerned for financing related to such a project. Not only that, I will bring an expert to the city to chalk out a plan,” the minister said. 
He was speaking at a programme organised by the Chittagong Journalists' Forum at its office in the capital yesterday.  “The incumbent mayor could save the city if he takes up a project in this regard. I could help him obtain approval for the project,” he said.
Forum president Mostafa Kamal presided over the programme. Mahfuzur Rahman Mita MP, Enamul Houqe Chowdhury, the editor of The Daily Sun, Anup Khastogir, special correspondent of the BSS, and forum secretary Mujib Masud also spoke at the programme.
“I can tell you, as an engineer, that there are many flyovers in Chittagong city that are unnecessary. I don’t want to build some flyovers, but right now I don’t have anything to say except that this is what makes the water system problematic,” said the minister.
“The leaders concerned are not taking care of the projects. Only 5 per cent of two bridges on the Airport Road has been completed in the past five years. But after the Prime Minister vented her anger last month over the two bridges on the Airport Road, the project was completed. After the PM got angry, 60 per cent of the project works were completed within one month, which indicates the state of the monitoring,” he added.
