It is heartening to note that the use of solar power is becoming popular among the poor in remote rural and char areas of Chandpur district, according to a report in this newspaper on Saturday. With the increase in the number of population the demand for electricity is also increasing in the country. Solar power can play an important role including reducing the health risk of rural families, checking environmental pollution, saving bio-gas and contributing to deforestation. Besides, through reduction in the use of kerosene oil substantial amount of foreign exchange is being saved.
Environmentalists have put due emphasis on promotion and use of renewable energies for protecting both climate and life. There is an enormous scope of reducing the gradually mounting pressure on fossil fuel through boosting use of renewable energies in both rural and urban areas.
The government can explore the potentials of environment-friendly solar power to address the problem greatly. This may contribute to the government’s pledge to reach electricity to all by the year 2021.
The alternative energy has caused a silent revolution in the rural economy. In the past, most of the people in rural areas would get lost in deep slumber just after evening. Now a different scenario is prevailing at villages: the villages are pulsating with activities till late into the night. This is really encouraging. At present electricity is mainly produced by using gas and coal. The renewable energy will lessen the pressure on gas. Then gas can be used in other productive sectors.
The government should take adequate measures for expansion of the project to reach its benefit to the people. Use of solar power will reduce the dependence on the conventional energy sources. This may contribute to growth of rural economy by creating employment opportunity. While other countries face sizeable economic and social costs of 'de-carbonization', alongside costs linked with retiring inefficient fossil fuel-based technologies, Bangladesh can go for green economy transition by maintaining and expanding the sustainable practices that already exist.
There is no alternative to inspiring and sensitizing the youths towards promoting and protecting the renewable energies. Availability of energy from different sources is vital for meeting the challenge of the ever-increasing demand for energy. All concerned should work together for building social awareness about a judicious use of fossil fuel and ending its misuse.
Small businessmen, people connected with cottage industry and other professions, and students are enjoying the benefits of solar energy.
